Grande Tuesday
- Spotted on MacArthur: a Lamborghini Gallardo in de rigour yellow. Miami Vice, biotch! (Actually, the other day I saw a Lotus Elise there, and it was so so much cooler.[1])
- Big trouble at little MPAC: it looks like $82 million of city money is getting yanked. Government officials got finally got mad at bailing out a project who’s other funding sources keep falling short? Nope: a spat between Burgess and Arriola. More on what may be the source of the conflict.
- Triff, Sintzer, and Lorie Mertes at Books and Books Friday.
- Aquaman pilot to start shooting in Miami.
- I wonder whether Carnival gave these Cubans the opportunity to try to make it to US soil.
- Rebecca decided to take the challenge yesterday and travel the county by public transit. The rest is here and here.
- ignore has an interview with 305 director Kareem Edouard.
- Ok, Rockstar games is out of control.
- Wacky Miami computer company makes good.
- Sunpost murmurs about new building regulations on Miami Beach. Personally, I don’t have a problem – hell yes we want to restrict what kind of McMansion crap you put up, and frankly, why shouldn’t the building codes be complicated; they’re laws, after all. If they’re serving a worthwhile goal, then getting an expert to look over your permit application doesn’t seem like an unreasonable burden if you want to build a house that the neighborhood will have to live with for the next 100 years.
- The buzz is on about Courier Blues, which is unupdated for a week now, so…
- No Channel 22 on my TV antenna. Why?
- Volkswagen discovers that “cojones” is offensive to Spanish speakers.
- New Herald blogs: one and two. Why is the latter on blogspot instead of blogs.herald.com?
- Some cranky guy gets into it with Bellsouth.
- Legal Art Miami. I have no idea what it is, but it looks cool.
- Some interesting comments on the purchase of the Knight-Ridder newspapers. Infomaniac says, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could be acquired by local investors who would run them as community resources?” Which, to me, sounds like my suggestion that the Herald go non-profit (towards the end of the post).
- Pirate radio interferes with air-traffic control. This wouldn’t be a problem if the FCC got sane and made it possible for small enthusiast radio stations to go legal, and thus be subject to rules that would prevent this sort of thing.
- Citizens for a Better South Florida looks interesting.
[1] The Lotus Elise costs around $40,000, which is amazingly cheap for a supercar. It also has a 1.8 liter, 4-cylinder engine, which, though, cranks out 190 horses. It also weighs 1975 lbs (compared to 3285 lbs for a Camry), so those 190 horses make it haul.

The Lambo has close to 500 horses and goes 0-60 in 3.9 secs.
Oh, and it costs $120K more than the Lotus.
Go figure.
.
Great post! Yeah, I had the chance to drive an Elise recently. It is ground hugging, barebones, “look at me” fun! My ass hurt from the shock of the hard ass seat/hard ass ride though. Alien Ware, gush, are my heroes- I did a thing about them as a example of a home grown tech company that are looking at internal (US) markets (Listen Up Beacon asswads!) Wish Burgess and Arriola would strangle each other to death and Merritt became Administrator Maximus. Al is down with the Pirates, yeah! A good buddy is a DJ at a Reggae/Soca outfit and he says the same thing, but jeez, stay away from the planes!Infomaniac is going into the dotage stage so she may have not realized… The Herald blogs so suck. I want to single a person out but I’ll be doing a post on it. And the kissing up has been so awful. Honestly, it’s time to clean house at the Herald(another post on that is coming). And boy are you right about that murmurs article- honestly, these guys have a lot of stuf to righteously bitch about so what’s with THAT bs?! Oh yeah, did you hear the article about the 200 people from Haiti and the DR that die each month trying to make it into the good ol’ Estados Unidos (only to live as illegal aliens) in the Herald? Oh yeah, they aren’t CUBAN, so why would the Herald cover that?- CM Rock, Rock on!(I’m still on hiatus which will end shortly; I’ve gotten to the point where I have to take Miami in small doses!)
I finally posted the rest of the Transportation Challenge on GreenerMiami.

Thanks for participating, Alesh!
I.. MUST.. have that Lotus!
And – Aquaman? TV series? Aquaman? Mujer Maravilla is very pleased!
Squak! Parrot Jungle should’ve never moved from its original beautiful lush location. Such decisions should’ve been left to the birds.
As for building regulations, I totally agree, although I doubt Miami Beach’s code will ever be as strict as Coral Gables’. There is a new McMansion across the canal from my backyard. LOL! There is LITERALLY no square footage left over or a spade of grass in the non-existent lawn. The house is practically tumbling into the water. Architecturally, it’s an eye sore.
But seriously, I thought I knew my beach, where the hell are these lots? There are maybe three 1 sq. ft. lots on this island!
“Cajones” is “dresser drawers.” You mean “cojones.”
oh shit. i’m always getting in trouble with the spanish. crap crap. thanks.
Monola~ See, they’re trying to get people to stop building those monstrosities. I agree 100% with the Parrot Jungle statement, and I think by now everyone at PJ does too.
Rebecca~ Congrats. ps click “Textile Help” to see how to do links in comments. ( i added the link above, though)
John ~ Was it covered anywhere?? do you have a link?? (oh and thanks for the comprehensive comment)
Rick/MM ~ The lotus goes 0-60 in 4.7 seconds; a testament to its engineering when you realize it has that tiny 4-cylinder. What’s more impressive, brute force, or agility? Personally, I like the road-feel of a lighter car (my hatchback gets 138 horses out of a 1.8l 4-cylinder, and it’s not half bad).
To answer your question, of the two new Miami Herald blogs you cited, mine is hosted on blogger (along with a half dozen other new Herald blogs), because the paper is in transition between it’s old software platform for blogs and a new system being set up. They didn’t want to wait weeks or months until the kinks are worked out of the new system to launch my blog and others. The one you cited that’s built on the Herald home page was set up on the old platform before the transition began but not actually launched until afterward.
Lotus has always been known for building great handling cars. I’m not quite sold on the look of the Lotus. Looks too much like a car you find at an amusement park to me.
I agree. HP isn’t everything. That’s why the Miata and the Mini have such a following. But talk to Mustang and Vette owners and it’s a whole other story.
Alesh said, “The lotus goes 0-60 in 4.7 seconds; a testament to its engineering when you realize it has that tiny 4-cylinder. What’s more impressive, brute force, or agility?”
I understood, “The lotus chirp chirp squeak squeak buzz buzz.”
Because I have no notion of horsepowers and agilities.
I just like the car because it’s cute as hell and looks about right for a short gal like me. And for a Lotus, great price.
Alesh: Thanks for posting the reading.
No sweat, Alfredo. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to go.
MM~ in english, a nice powerful english + a light car = fun to drive. It’s cute; looks kind of like a complicated nike sneaker.
Jillmatrix, that’s so very true! LOL!
I’ve noticed that many English-speaking folks tend to write cojones as cajones. If you say it outloud in “English” with the right twang, that’s what it sounds like.
Alesh, that’s a great photo.
MM, I hear ya, girl! I’m a shortcake too. Easier to get in and out of such a car, yes? But not when wearing a mini-skirt.
It is a very good looking car indeed. But just think of all the Manolo Blahniks one could buy for $40K! My mind is reeling! :-)
Manola, kudos to you for wearing the minis! But my mini-skirt days are long over, I fear. I don’t think I’m too old, I’m just too self-conscious about the ol’ Cuban thighs… sigh…
Anecdotally, the newer Elise uses the Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine from the Celica GT-S. Lotus tunes it, of course. Much greater detail available here.
